Bollywood’s July Box Office Rush: 12 Big Films, Shrinking Screens, & Rising Stakes
Bollywood is entering one of its most competitive months in recent memory, with 12 major films slated to release throughout July 2025. Titles like Metro… In Dino, Aap Jaisa Koi, Maalik, Son of Sardaar 2, and Param Sundari are set to clash for audience attention, screen space, and weekend momentum.

The Hindi film industry is bracing for a blockbuster traffic jam this July, as studios unleash a wave of high-profile releases in quick succession. With a dozen theatrical debuts locked in across four weeks, this hyper-competitive environment could spell box office gold for a few — but disaster for many.
Among the big-budget frontrunners are:
- Metro… In Dino (dir. Anurag Basu): A multi-narrative urban drama with a stellar ensemble.
- Aap Jaisa Koi (starring Ayushmann Khurrana): A quirky rom-com with a retro-fusion soundtrack.
- Maalik (starring John Abraham): A high-octane action thriller tackling political corruption.
- Son of Sardaar 2 (Ajay Devgn returns): The sequel to the 2012 comedy-action hit.
- Param Sundari (with Kriti Sanon): A musical romance set in rural India.
The Small Film Dilemma
While this lineup sounds like a cinephile’s dream, industry experts warn that this release glut is unsustainable. With a limited number of premium screens, especially in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, smaller or mid-budget films may struggle to find traction.
“Big films are absorbing all prime-time slots. Independent and offbeat movies won’t survive unless they find breathing room on OTT,” says film exhibitor Rohit Chaturvedi.
Theaters are also under pressure to prioritize franchise films and star-studded vehicles, which promise higher footfall in an unpredictable box office climate.
OTT as a Lifeline?
As screens shrink, many producers are exploring hybrid release models or fast-tracking deals with streaming giants like Netflix, JioCinema, and Prime Video. In fact, insiders say several July releases may hit OTT within 3–4 weeks of theatrical release, further fueling the "watch-at-home" trend.
What to Watch For
Audiences can expect a rollercoaster of genres: from romance and action to satire and socio-political drama. But for box office analysts, July 2025 will be a case study in content saturation, audience fatigue, and the evolving balance between theatrical and digital.
